Course Description:
The primary objective of the Chemistry course will be to produce a scientifically literate student who will have a working knowledge of chemistry and recognize the crucial role it plays in everyday life. Its main goal is to make science understandable through careful concept development, laboratory experiments, hands-on demonstrations, and problem solving strategies. The students will be encouraged to think logically, make observations, analyze information, and develop creativity. Chemistry is a challenging course designed for the student who has successfully mastered the mathematical concepts required for this course.
The evaluation of the learner will be a comprehensive assessment of critical thinking skills. These assessments will be based on objective and essay tests, oral presentations, and student performance. Many topics can be evaluated in several different ways. However, the emphasis will be on critical thinking and higher order cognitive skills rather than simple memorization of facts. Students will be given the opportunity to merge chemical concepts with laboratory experimentation.

Attendance Policy
The Shelby County Board of Education (Policy #6108) believes that regular attendance is a necessary requirement of all students and that any student with the maturity and interest should be included in some phase of the school program.

All students are expected to attend school on each day that school is officially in session. Only the following reasons will be considered for excused absences:

•    Illness of student.
•    Death or serious illness within the student’s immediate family.
•    When the student is officially representing the school in a school sponsored activity.
•    Special and recognized religious holidays regularly observed by persons of their faith.
•    Legal court summons not as a result of the student’s misconduct.
•    Extenuating circumstances over which the student has no control as approved by the principal.
•    If necessary, verification is required from an official or other source to justify absences.

All other absences than those outlined above shall be considered unexcused.  A written statement, within two (2) school days of the student’s return to school, shall be required from the parent or guardian explaining the reason for each absence.

Make Up Policy
Make up work needs to be completed upon return to school.  You will be allowed one day for every missed day to make up your work.  After that, the assignment is counted as late.

Late Work/Extra Credit Policy
Late work is ONLY accepted if I have clearly seen that you have fully attempted the work in class, asked questions, show me your notes from the class, and have shown me where you looked to the book for help (you should know where the topic is in your book because you referred to the text for help) and are still having difficulty with the assignment.  This would mean that you are concerned enough with the assignment that you discuss the matter BEFORE school with me.  If you have more than one day to complete the assignment before it is due, then there is no exception for the incompletion of the assignment.

Supply List
•    Pens AND Pencils
•    Loose-Leaf College Ruled Paper
•    Three Ring Binder (1 ½” or more)
•    Binder Dividers
•    Composition Book (bound notebook, usually black and white speckled)
•    Scientific Calculator (Does NOT have to be graphing, but MUST say “scientific”)

Spring Semester

Hello Everyone!!!

We are half-way through with High School Chemistry!!!  Yeah!!!  Keep in mind though that we are ONLY half way through and school isn’t over yet.  This semester of Chemistry is 98% math.  Be sure to have a SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR every single day in my class.  Without it, you WILL be lost. Remember, I offer tutoring every Tuesday and Thursday after school, but if you don’t show up in the first 10 minutes, I will not wait.  Keep your chins up and the semester will fly by!

End of Fall Semester – Tutoring

We are coming to the end of the Fall Semester which means we are almost halfway finished with the year!!!  It is important to remember that the Spring Semester in Chemistry is mostly math.  If you are not very good at math, then you really need to focus on finishing this Fall Semester with a bang so that your year average will be decent.  I offer tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:00 until whenever.  However, if I wait till 2:30 and no one is here, I call it a day so be on time!!!

1st Quarter Syllabus Edit

Students and Parents/Guardians:

There were two mistakes on the syllabus for this year.  The first one is the layout for the nine weeks.  The books for Honors and General Chemistry were switched which makes the chapters incorrect on the syllabus.  The other mistake was a typo on the grading system.  Tests are worth 35% not 40%.  The corrected syllabi are attached below.  Thank you and sorry for any inconvenience.
